THE DEVELOPER CONNECTION FOR OS/2

Part of the Developer Connection DDK is the Developer Connection for OS/2. This convenient, timely, and comprehensive collection of information, tools, and sample code enables software developers on the 32-bit OS/2 platform to fully exploit the operating system functionality.

The Developer Connection for OS/2 CD delivers the latest version of the Developer's Toolkit for OS/2 (which includes the Multimedia Presentation Manager (R) Toolkit), other toolkits, and various productivity tools, development tools, and sample code. A search engine is provided for easy navigation through the tremendous amounts of information and code on the CD.

The CD also provides pre-release software that allows the developer to create user environments to test and develop software. Pre-release versions of OS/2 and relative operating systems (with limited licenses) are provided to foster early development and testing, such as testing your device drivers on new platforms. Pre-release versions of development and productivity tools are also provided. Some examples of these tools are:

  • OpenDoc Components
  • Multimedia Ultimotion (TM) (Video IN)
  • Motion Video AVI Files
  • Communication Manager for OS/2 (Single User)
  • VisualAge (TM)
  • PL/I Workstation/2
  • TCP/IP for OS/2

Pre-release code content of the Developer Connection for OS/2 CD may change periodically. The pre-release code may be modified substantially before general availability. IBM does not guarantee that any of the programs contained in the pre-release section will ever be made generally available.

The CD includes the very latest softcopy documentation on OS/2 from IBM; documentation on the various pre-release products on the CD is also provided. Some examples are:

  • OS/2 Technical Library
  • Communication Manager Technical Library
  • REXX Information
  • TCP/IP Information

Both the softcopy documentation and the release-level products will be updated as needed or available.

The DEVELOPER CONNECTION NEWS offers information on IBM personal operating systems, new products, and technical articles direct from OS/2 development. Back issues of the DEVELOPER CONNECTION NEWS will also be available in displayable softcopy format on the Developer Connection for OS/2 CD.

THE DEVELOPER CONNECTION FOR OS/2 SOFTWARE SHOPPER: The Developer Connection for OS/2 Software Shopper is a CD-based software catalog. Using innovative and sophisticated encryption technology, the Software Shopper provides product information and guides you through the ordering process. You can shop for a variety of software products, purchase a product, receive a "key" (password), "unlock" the product, and install it directly from the CD.

Additional information about this Developer Connection for OS/2 element is provided on the Developer Connection for OS/2 Software Shopper CD.

THE DEVELOPER CONNECTION FOR OS/2 UPGRADE

While the Developer Connection for OS/2 continues to be separately available, customers who license the Developer Connection for OS/2 may upgrade to the IBM Developer Connection Device Driver Kit for OS/2. Customers who take advantage of this upgrade will receive the current Developer Connection DDK CD and all future, generally available Developer Connection DDK CDs released prior to their Developer Connection for OS/2 membership expiration.

It is intended, however, to answer specific questions after the device driver developer has made a reasonable effort to obtain an answer using available information.

Technical support for device driver development is provided via a bulletin board system (BBS) known as the "DUDE", by the IBM Driver Development Support Center (DDSC). Developers are encouraged to use the DDSC to obtain support through sending in their own questions and reviewing the question and answer history database which can be easily downloaded for review off-line.

Developers interested in using the DDSC should call 407-982-3217 via modem to register and to access the support system. To obtain a brief message of the services available, developers can call 407-982-4239.

Technical assistance for The Developer Connection for OS/2 is provided by submitting questions on an electronic forum and receiving responses directly from IBM developers. Access to the forum on CompuServe (OS2DF2) will be available to all Developer Connection for OS/2 members until membership expiration (one year duration).

Q1. I am a licensee of the IBM Device Driver Source Kit for OS/2. What is The Developer Connection Device Driver Kit for OS/2?

A1. The IBM Developer Connection Device Driver Kit for OS/2 is basically the IBM Device Driver Source Kit for OS/2 combined with The Developer Connection for OS/2. Some elements of The Developer Connection for OS/2 are useful to device driver developers and the offering has been expanded to incorporate hose elements into one product offering.

If you purchased the IBM Device Driver Source Kit for OS/2 after November 1, 1993 and before November 1, 1994, you were automatically transferred to this new offering and your membership will expire, unless you renew, on the anniversary of the date you ordered the IBM Device Driver Source Kit for OS/2

Q2. Does The Developer Connection DDK replace The Developer Connection for OS/2?

A2. No, The Developer Connection for OS/2 remains a separately available product and is included with a license to the Developer Connection DDK. So, you can get both by licensing or purchasing The Developer Connection DDK.

The Developer Connection DDK does replace the IBM Device Driver Source Kit for OS/2.

Q3. Everything I need is on the DDK CD. Can I buy the DDK CD for a price lower than The Developer Connection DDK? Why am I now receiving The Developer Connection for OS/2?

A3. No, you can only receive the DDK CD by licensing The Developer Connection DDK.

Through quarterly deliveries, The Developer Connection for OS/2 provides the latest levels of the toolkits; you do not need to buy the toolkit separately and you receive all the fixes and new function. The Developer Connection for OS/2 also provides beta levels of new operating systems allowing you to test your drivers on these new systems. Device Driver source samples provided in The Developer Connection News are included on The Developer Connection CD. New technology is introduced giving you a perspective from where the next device driver requirements will come. And, of course, all of the productivity and development tools are provided in one place on a frequent basis.

Q4. I am in a small development group and we all need to use The Developer Connection DDK, but I can not afford several copies of the program. Is there a less expensive alternative?

A4. The Developer Connection DDK offers Additional Licenses to the program. If you purchase The Developer Connection DDK, you can purchase one or more additional licenses which allow you to make one copy of the information on the CD for each additional license ordered.

Q5. Prior to the announce of The Developer Connection DDK, I licensed both The Developer Connection for OS/2 and the IBM Device Driver Source Kit for OS/2. When do I need to renew my membership to the Developer Connection DDK?

A5. Your membership to The Developer Connection DDK has been determined by the date which you last ordered one of those products. For example, if you ordered the Device Driver Source Kit in July and The Developer Connection for OS/2 in September, your membership to The Developer Connection Device Driver Kit will last until next September.

Q6. I license the Developer Connection for OS/2 and am now interested in receiving the Device Driver Kit information. Can I upgrade my membership?

A6. Yes, you can upgrade your membership. Your membership to The Developer Connection for OS/2 will be transferred to the Developer Connection DDK and will expire, unless you renew, on the date when your membership to The Developer Connection for OS/2 would have expired.

Q7. I license The Developer Connection for OS/2 and have one or more additional licenses to it. If I upgrade to The Developer Connection DDK, what happens to the Additional Licenses for The Developer Connection for OS/2?

A7. You may retain the additional licenses and continue to use them as before, or you can upgrade them via The Developer Connection Additional License Upgrade which allows you make one copy of the DDK CD for each additional license upgraded.
