The High Performance Optical File System (HPOFS.IFS) is a removable media file system for optical storage devices. HPOFS can be used along with or instead of the OS/2 2.x file allocation table (FAT).
HPOFS uses the unique features of optical media, and features include:
- Long name file support (254 characters maximum length)
- Mixed case file name support
- Full extended attribute support
- Multiple code page support for world-wide use
- Code page 437 U.S. ENGLISH
- Code page 500 EBCDIC
- Code page 850 INTERNATIONAL ASCII
- Code page 942 JAPANESE
- Code page 944 KOREAN
- Code page 948 CHINESE
Use HPOFS in the following circumstances:
- Copying files from hard disk drives formatted by using the High Performance File System (HPFS). When copying files from HPFS formatted drives onto HPOFS formatted optical cartridges, mixed case and long-file names, in addition to extended attribute files, are preserved.
- Migrating 5.25-inch cartridges into the 3995 optical library. Because HPOFS is used in the 3995 libraries, cartridges can be loaded directly into the library without having to be copied.
- Ability to read cartridges formatted and written on a 3995 optical library.
- High performance requirements.
HPOFS provides superior performance in many situations, especially when many files are present on a cartridge.
Use the standard FAT file system when exchanging optical media with another station that does not have HPOFS. Do not use HPOFS in this circumstance.
NOTE: Refer to IBM 3995 Optical Library Dataserver: Optical Disk Format for more specific information.
