In response to a growing number of questions regarding developing NDIS LAN device drivers, we have collected some information that addresses the most commonly asked questions.

Q: What documentation is available to help me write a LAN driver?

A: These documents define API's for LAN and NetBIOS programming. They are available from the PC Bookline (800)426-7282

  • Local Area Technical Reference - Part No. SC30-3383-03
  • Supplement to Local Area Technical Reference - Part No. SD21-0049-00

A good third party book is "Client/Server Programming with OS/2" by Robert Orfalli and Dan Harkey.

Q: Is there any documentation available that describes NDIS MAC driver specifications?

A: IBM NDIS Driver Implementation Package - This documentation on the Network Driver Interface Specification and on Media Access Control (MAC) drivers for network cards is available free of charge. Contact Michael Ward (IBM, AUSTIN) at (512) 838-8104. Michael can also assist in driver certification.

Q: Is there a DDK available for LAN drivers?

A: NDIS Device Driver Toolkit for OS/2 and DOS - this contains source code for LAN device drivers and is available from DWB Associates, (503)626-3081. The price is approximately $500.
