A network operating system originally introduced as a part of a hardware/software package called S-Net by the Novell Corp. and ran on Motorola 68000 based servers built by the company, the system was renamed NetWare in 1984 with the introduction of NetWare/86 which was a software only version that ran on servers based around intel 8086/8 processors and were sold bundled with networking cards and systems for the IBM PC and compatible systems.

NetWare became the predominant network operating system of the 80's and early 90's but lost out to Microsoft Windows servers in the mid 90's. While predominantly sold as a standalone product there were also versions that ran atop of OS/2 and the current version runs on top of SUSE Linux.
