A network operating system.

History

The system was originally introduced as a part of a hardware/software package called S-Net by the Novell Corp. in 1983 and ran on Motorola 68000 based servers built by the company, the system was renamed NetWare in 1984 with the introduction of NetWare/86 which was a software only version that ran on servers based around Intel 8086/8 processors and were sold bundled with networking cards and systems for the IBM PC and compatible systems.

NetWare became the predominant network operating system of the 80s and early 90s but lost out to Microsoft Windows servers in the mid 90s. While predominantly sold as a stand-alone product there were also versions that ran atop of OS/2 and the current version runs on top of SuSE Linux.
