An UNIX like operating system developed by Sun Microsystems to replace their SunOS system, it was renamed Oracle Solaris in 2010 after Oracle took over Sun. Primarily developed on Sun's own SPARC architecture but ports also exist for other architectures. Fujitsu uses Solaris on their SPARC based mini and mainframe computer systems and holds out their own variant.

Notably Solaris is one of the few UNIX like systems that comply with the Single Unix Specification alongside AIX and HP-UX

Version

  • Current version is 11.3
