History
A CP/M database system introduced in 1980 as dBASE II and was quickly ported to most common 8-bit platforms. It was ported to DOS in 1982 and later to OS/2 and MS Windows and became an industry standard in the early to mid 80s and the basis of the xBase language, but declined rapidly in the 90s when it could not keep up with the competition. In 1991 Ashton-Tate was sold to Borland International.
Originally developed by C. Wayne Ratliff for Ashton-Tate which released the dBASE II product in 1981.
Ashton-Tate was acquired by Borland International in 1991.
