Tools primarily intended for creating and editing text documents. However a number of word processors have origins in screen editors with word processor functions bolted on and are therefore often used as programmers text editors. Word processors that can work directly with plain text files are also sometimes favoured by programmers that work with text heavy applications since they can spell and grammar check the text while coding with much more advanced tools than are available with common text editors.

In addition some word processors have strong office automation features that are either programmable or semi-programmable and that makes them both a development tool in their own right, but more frequently used as a front end for a more advanced office automation (OA) system, although this was more common in the 80s and 90s than it is now.

And finally, word processors like Microsoft Word and Lotus WordPro have macro languages that are not only surprisingly powerful but based on [[Basic]], this makes them much easier to use than the common [[C]] and [[LISP]] like languages used by most programmers editors and in addition many programmers have better Basic skills than they have C or LISP skills which makes customising the WP a much less daunting task for them than customising a programmers editors.
