Make it a habit to explore The Developer's Toolkit for OS/2 Warp - each volume of The Developer Connection for OS/2 provides a new version of the Toolkit, with additions, fixes, and enhancements to the content each time.

If you haven't checked out the new Using Your Toolkit book, which was introduced on Volume 7 of The Developer Connection, take some time to look it over. It's a good starting point for anyone new to OS/2 programming or who is not familiar with all the Toolkit has to offer. It also contains a "What's New" section that explains the changes in each volume.

On Volume 8 of The Developer Connection, the Toolkit has two new installation categories: one called "Beta" gives you a glimpse of Toolkit support for future versions of the operating system, and one called "Try Me!" lets you try out new tools and samples that can be executed on currently available versions of OS/2.

Are you getting excited about the prospect of creating games for OS/2? In the "Beta" section, the Entertainment Toolkit provides unique features you need to create games and entertainment software. Here's what you'll find:

  • Argonaut's BRender 3D graphic support, as well as full-screen DIVE video support
  • Enhanced MIDI audio support
  • Multiplayer networking support
  • Advanced joystick support

There's also a Games page on the World Wide Web (http://www.austin.ibm.com/os2games) to help you get a jump on developing those games. (Careful - it's easy to get hooked!)

The "Try Me!" component has two hot items: the Universal Resource Editor (URE), and the Assembly Language Processor (ALP). URE is a multi-purpose GUI editor (see the article about URE in this issue of The Developer Connection News). ALP is a Macro Assembler for building device drivers and producing standard Object Module Format (OMF) files that are designed to be linked for maximum 32-bit OS/2 execution efficiency.
