An English language monthly magazine published in the USA from 1975 to 2014 commonly referred to as "Dobbs" or DDJ, it focused or topics related to software development in general.

History

Originally published by a computer club that formed around a Tiny Basic implementation and was called People's Computer Company and the magazine was then known as "dr. dobb's journal of Tiny BASIC Calisthenics & Orthodontia: Running Light Without Overbyte", in 1976 the focus of the publication was extended general programming topics and the title shortened to "Dr. Dobb's Journal of Calisthenics & Orthodontia".

The publication stopped being delivered in print form in 2009 but continued to be available in PDF format for a little while afterwards, with material from contributors also appearing in a recurring column called Dr. Dobb's Report that appeared in InformationWeek and the company continued publishing new material on the web. It was finally was closed down in 2014 after losing 70% of its online advertising revenue since 2012.

Jolt Awards

In 1991 the Magazine in association with the manufacturer of the Jolt Cola soft drink started giving out yearly awards called simply Jolt to the manufacturers of outstanding or notable programming tools, utilities and operating systems. This caused a great deal of interest during the first couple of years as there were no other product related awards that focused on software development tools but that interest quickly fizzed out especially after the demise of its namesake sponsor. The magazine continued with the awards though to the end even if they were a bit low key during its last few years and more of an editorial feature than awards in the traditional sense, the last Awards were given out in December 2014.
