Desktop Ai, Inc. was founded in Westport Connecticut, USA in 1986 by Rich Roth and delivered its first product in the form of a dBase to C translator called dBx, this allowed people to take dBase applications they had the sources to and simplify the porting of them to C. In 1992 the company released a development of that product in the form of X2C which was a full xBase intermediate compiler complete with libraries that allowed users to take dBase/xbase application sources and compile them without change with the help of a C compiler, this opened up the possibility to port xBase applications to various Unices and other systems without paying for an expensive developers licence for each target.

The Desktop Ai company ceased to exist by 1994 and Mr Roth returned that same year with a new company called "On-the Net East" that specialised in database applications on the net and homepage design, OnNE continued to sell X2C but converted the distribution model from a classic commercial offering to an open source shareware distribution, and introduced another shareware program in the form of Moving My Data. By 2001 that company was no more and Mr had a new company called "TnR Global LLC" that was by then a specialist in search databases and website development, since the company no longer used the X2C package in-house they decided to open source it under a liberal licence.
